Life Lessons- Do What You Love.

This year i’ve spent a lot of time trying to figure out what I want to do with my life. It’s been hard, but there have been many great lessons and experiences along the way.

I’m 28, I have a masters degree, and I’ve done nothing but work in jobs where I wasn’t using my education. The people I worked with were amazing and there were things I loved about each job– but I wasn’t happy. In fact I was utterly depressed.

And miserable.

One day, my boyfriend and I were talking about different employment options I had around where we live. After another year of looking (and admittedly not looking hard enough) nothing had come up. I was still not using my degree. Still not able to pay back those student loans. But I’d allowed myself to get comfortable in the job I was in. Continue reading

Monday Musings- Can I Hibernate Until Winter is Over?

Hello friends, I haven’t been updating here much, but have quite a bit planned for this week. Yay!

Anyway, it’s no secret that it’s been pretty damn cold lately (and it’s been cold everywhere!). Upstate and Central New York have had a record breaking month this February with how cold it’s been! We haven’t had a day above freezing all month long. It makes me want to hide under my covers til spring!hidingundercovers

However, it makes for some pretty cool and beautiful winter scenery.

A spring-fed fountain in Letchworth State Park created an ice volcano!!!

This is about an hour and a half (give or take a little) from where I live. It’s huge and gorgeous. I hope I get to go see it before it melts. Look how tiny the person looks next to it!!! Want to see more? Click here for a local news story.

Also, Niagara Falls has frozen…

See it on the news!

And the snowmen have surrendered!!!

In other words, I want to hibernate.

It’s cold. It’s snowy… we’ve gotten over 150 inches of snow so far and it keeps on coming! I’ve gotten very little writing done in the past couple of weeks. I finished a chapter last Friday that took me 2 weeks to revise. At least I’m still writing, but my productivity has been very low.

How is the winter weather affecting you?

Is it Summer where you live (or at least warmer)? Because if it is I’m jealous!

Amanda's Nose in a Book is Back!!!

I apologize for not being active this Summer. Things got pretty crazy for a little while there and honestly, I needed a break from blogging for a few weeks. But hopefully I will be back to the normal swing of things pretty soon.

I’ve been working on my novel a lot since I posted last and have been working with my critique partner on ways that I can make my writing stronger. Things are coming along nicely in that area of my life. The last two weeks or so I really struggled with one chapter, but once I finally finished that, I feel so much better about my novel.

So. I will continue to post reviews, features, and such here on my blog, but I also want to talk more about writing. That is something I have been toying around with in my mind this past month. As much as I love reviewing books and participating in memes, I was beginning to feel bored with the posts I was making.

Since my nose is usually in a book, be it one that I am reading, or one that I am writing— Amanda’s Nose in a book is going to expand a little bit in what content I blog about!

Here’s to revamping and revitalizing my blog! Thank you for supporting me.happygoat

The Very Inspiring Blogger Award!!!

veryinspiringbloggerawardI was nominated earlier this week for the Very Inspiring Blogger award by Drown in Melancholy!

Thank you so much for nominating my blog for this award. It makes me so happy to know that you enjoy my posts! You should definitely check out her blog! She reviews books, films and blogs about a variety of different things. She keeps her blog fresh and fun 🙂

4.Nominate 15 other amazing blogs and comment on their posts to let them know they have been nominated.
5.Optional: Proudly display the award logo on your blog and follow the blogger who nominated you.

Seven Facts About Me:

1. I hate shoes! I am one of the very few ladies I know who owns very few pair of shoes (only the necessary ones). The thing is that I always prefer my feet to be as bare as possible (especially during the warmer months). So I will be sporting flip flops all summer if i have to wear shoes anywhere.

2. I’m from Oswego, NY. It’s a little college town on Lake Ontario with beautiful sunsets. I have lived here nearly my whole life (minus about 6 months that I lived in Potsdam). It has beautiful springs, summers, and autumns, however winters are brutal. I look forward to the day when I can move away from here and the umpteen feet of snow we get each winter.

3. I’ve been trying to walk 3 miles a day at least 5 days a week. Since I’ve been doing this I feel so much better about everything. It’s so relaxing and great me time to think about my novel and daydream, plus it’s great exercise!!! I have walked 65 miles in the past 3 weeks 🙂

4. Other than reading and writing, one of my favorite hobbies is crochet. Its such a relaxing hobby, but I need a break from it. I just did a craft show where I had a bunch of crochet stuffed animal critters.

5. I’m a total “city” girl and grew up in the city of Oswego (even though it is a very small city). Now I’m living in the country outside Oswego and it’s actually growing on me. I like how quiet it is and how much space we have, but I miss being able to walk everywhere I go.

6. I try to read and/or write every day. It’s one of those routines that I got myself into and really enjoy. Like my daily walks, I look forward to that time, even if it is only 15 minutes.

7. I worked in an ice cream shop for 8 years (seasonal summer work) all though high school and my undergraduate years of college. It was definitely a fun experience and I hope to draw some of those experiences into a YA book that I started writing and then set to the side a couple of years ago.

I nominate these wonderful blogs 🙂 :

J81WZeoyThis week has not been a good week for blogging. I am still reading the same two books that I was last week (and haven’t gotten much further along in them) but I did get a letter from my new penpal this week!

A couple of weeks ago, I joined the Postmark Society, a community for bloggers to find blogger penpals.

Years ago we used to get so excited to get an email because most of our communication came via mail. Today in the age of internet communication with email, blogs, and text messages we don’t get much hand-written mail, so it’s a treat when we do get some.

I sent my letter in response to my penpal this afternoon and I will be excited to hear back from her.

If you are interested in joining the Postmark Society check it out here!!!

If you’d like to be one of my penpals, let me know! I love sending/receiving letters and postcards!

Hopefully this weekend/next week I will be able to catch up with the book blog posts!

If we were having cake.

Today is my 27th birthday and in honor of my birthday, I thought that I would do a twist on the meme “if we were having coffee,” and change it to “if we were having cake.” I saw one of my book blog friends do this a little while ago and absolutely loved the idea. To keep it with the bookish theme, check out the amazing bookish cakes/cupcakes I found online. Who wouldn’t wanna nom on those bad boys?

If we were having cake…harry-potter-birthday-theme-cakes-cupcakes-mumbai-35

I would bring you to one of my favorite local bakery/coffee shops There are a couple of ones where I live that make deliciously glorious baked goods (especially cupcakes and cakes). We would choose something that looked absolutely scrumptious, order a cup of coffee or tea and sit there for hours. I would probably pick up one of Oswego Tea Company’s tempting looking black forest cake cupcakes. We could catch up and or get to know one another a little better. I would ask you about yourself and what you are interested in, your passions, and new things that you are thinking of exploring this coming summer

If we were having cake…

I would probably chit chat with you about books. Ones you love and ones that you just couldn’t force yourself to finish. Ones that you think I need to move to the top of my TBR list and ones that I just can’t get enough of. We would talk about how I am hard-core fangirling over The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer and Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor, and how I am really struggling to finish We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves by Karen Joy Fowler. I would probably ask you what I should do about not finishing this book that came so highly recommended to me, which I like, but that really isn’t my cup of tea.

If we were having cake…

I would tell you how absolutely crazy life is right now. Between trying to finish another draft of my novel, trying to get back into blogging after a rather off month, working on crochet projects for an upcoming craft show getting ready for my boyfriend’s college graduation party, and other summer celebrations I don’t know if I have much time to breathe. But I will also tell you that I am super excited for all of these things and that I wouldn’t have it any other way.

If we were having cake…

I would tell you all about how I planned on finishing my second draft of my novel last month in Camp NaNoWriMo, but that didn’t even come close to happening. Sometimes life gets in the way and sometimes writer’s block sucks. However, I did write about 12k words all in new chapters and scenes. I would also let you know that I plan on giving Camp NaNoWriMo another shot again in July and this time, working on a story that has been kicking around in my brain for years now. Confessions of an Ice Cream girl promises to be a funny contemporary novel (hopefully). Summer is the perfect time for me to write one of those 🙂

Thank you all so much!

Today my blog reached 100 followers on WordPress!!!

I decided to make a mini-vlog to thank all of you for your wonderful support.

And also a huge thank you to Brin from Brin’s Book Blog and Katarina from Katarina the Kat for nominating me for the Liebster Blog Award. I will try to make a post about both of your nominations this week.

I couldn’t have continued Amanda’s Nose in a book without all of the support and friendship that I have received from everyone here.

Much love <3

Crochet Mood Blanket 2014- Week 2

Last week was kind of iffy for me crocheting-wise. I am enjoying making this blanket because it’s really easy to find time to make a square at least every other day. However when it comes to making other projects I’ve put that on the backburner, which I shouldn’t because I have a craft show coming up. But after that I think it’s time I took a break from most things crafty (except for my blanket) and begin to really focus on revising my novel.  Here are all of the squares I made this week and a photo of all of the squares I have made thus far. I can’t wait until I have a cozy warm blanket to curl up with.

Anyway. I need to start revising my book from NaNoWriMo. I’m really struggling to get the motivation to sit down and look at it scene-by-scene and get to the major plot/character/theme issues. It doesn’t help that once again I don’t have a computer at home. But the library is always a productive place for me to get some work done.

See ya later, friends. Stay tuned for more crafty posts!
