October is the time of Halloween. If you love to read books about ghosts and monsters this time of year, here is a list of my top paranormal books to read this October.
These books are mostly YA (young adult) with some middle grade (MG) mixed in –so there will hopefully be something for everyone. But even if you’re an adult, I highly recommend these books to you!
If you missed my last post Top Ten Witchy Books to read this October, you can find it here
1. City of Ghosts by Victoria Schwab
By now, everyone knows how much I love Victoria Schwab’s books, right? Her newest middle grade book, City of Ghosts will take you along with Cass on an adventure through the haunted streets of Scotland, with her ghost best-friend and her parent’s black cat by her side.
2. Dread Nation by Justina Ireland
Part alternate history and part zombie novel, Dread Nation by Justina Ireland isn’t a book that you will soon forget. In the aftermath of the Civil War, African American teenagers, are forced to fight off the zombies that have been attacking the cities since the Battle of Gettysburg. They have to attend schools to learn how to fight, and become attendants to the wealthy white people in the cities, fighting off the zombies and keeping their employers safe.
3. The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman
Nobody (Bod) Evans is an orphan, raised by the ghosts living in a graveyard since his parents were murdered when he was a baby. But the murderer is on the loose and is still searching for Bod. Will the residents of the graveyard be able to keep Bod safe as he grows to a young man? I love the whimsical feel of this book and all of the characters (epecially the deceased ones) have a special place in my heart. This was my first Neil Gaiman read, and I’ve re-read it every year since.
4. Coraline by Neil Gaiman
Whether or not you’ve already seen the film, I highly recommend that you read the book. Neil Gaiman’s descriptions are creepy and evoke haunting imagery. This book is my favorite book by Gaiman, and gave me weird dreams for days after I read it.
5. The Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater
One of my favorite YA paranormal series, The Raven Cycle is about a girl who’s been told that she will kiss (and kill) her first love, and a group of boys who attend an elite private school. While Blue Sargeant doesn’t typically like the Raven Boys (those who attend Aglionby Academy) she is drawn to a small group of them, and finds that they’re on the hunt for a long-lost King and the magic he’s fabled to endow upon the person who discovers him. This series is beautifully written and with characters you love to love.
6. Anna Dressed in Blood by Kendare Blake
Cas has taken up his deceased father’s legacy of traveling around the world, killing ghosts. When he gets a tip about a girl named Anna, who kills everyone who dares enter the house where she once lived, Cas is determined that she is his next job. But when he meets her, Anna is not all that she appears. Who is she and what happened to make her such a vengeful spirit?
